4-7 Singled Out

Summary by: Laura

Orginal Air Date: 1996-11-01

Writer: Steve Hibbert

Director: Jeff McCracken

Capsule Summary: Eric goes on MTV's Singled Out; Cory gets a tonsillectomy.

Extendo Summary: Eric feels like he is a townie loser. He wants to meet college girls, but he can't get into Swarthmore without an ID. He applies to go on a special college edition of MTV's Singled Out. He tells the producers he goes to Harvard, and fortunately they don't ask him for credentials--mostly because he has nice hair. While on the show, he accidentally sends away all naughty alcoholics, and ends up with only sweet sensitive girls. Dumb sweet sensitive girls! He doesn't mess up in part 2, where he has written down all his answers beforehand, and he wins a dream date at Chubbie's with one Lisa Thurman from Columbia University.

On the date, Lisa reveals that she doesn't really go to Columbia--she didn't get in. She didn't get in anywhere. She's a townie! Eric tells her he did the same thing. This makes them feel better about themselves and each other. Eric says he will get into college someday.

Meanwhile, Cory has to get a tonsillectomy. Shawn tells him about a story he saw on CNN ("they suckered me in with a story about cake") about a boy who disappeared during a routine hospital operation, which makes Cory nervous throughout the whole procedure. Under sedatives, he has a dream in which he has vanished and his family and friends are interviewed on a show about unexplained phenomena by J. Peterman from Seinfeld. In real life, though, everything is fine.

Quotes:

"You're missing the point here! Cake!"  --Shawn

Highlights:

  • Eric on Swarthmore: "That's where I'd be if I wasn't such a moron."
  • Mr. Feeny lies to Eric about his evening plans, claiming he is just going out to get milk. "No, no, milk! Got milk? No I don't. Gotta get some."
  • Eric gets a letter: "Congratulations on being selected to be a contestant on Singled Out! And please don't bring your negative negative dad."
  • Eric walks out of the back door, saying as he does "Mr. Feeny, I have to talk to you." He is alarmed to find the Feeny backyard empty. "How could you not be here?" He looks around. "Mr. Feeny?" His voice tinged with hysteria, he calls, "MR. FEENY!"
Mr. Feeny rushes out with a book. "Mr. Matthews. What can I do for you?"
Eric: "I got a problem, you're not out here gardening! You're not at school, you're not gardening! What are you doing!"
"I'm sorry!" says Mr. Feeny, adding comfortingly, "I'm here now."
  • Cory: "This is New York Times Trailer Park edition!"
Shawn: "It's exactly the same except you can eat it!"
  • Shawn dresses as a surgeon to sneak in and see Cory after visiting hours. While he is there, a Dr. Hunter is paged and called to delivery. Cory tells him it's a different Dr. Hunter, but Shawn insists on going to delivery. He says, "I tell ya, Cory, no matter how many you do, it's a miracle every time."
  • Thinking he's going to die, a drugged Cory calls Feeny and makes him come close to his bed. "I need to make peace with you," he says. Feeny assures him all is forgiven, but Cory says, "In the classroom under my desk is a key. The key will open airport locker B378. In the locker is a tattered plaid valise. In the valise you will find all my homework for five years. See, all these years I've understood everything. I'm actually a brilliant student."
Feeny: "What is the capital of Montana?"
Cory: "... You're not going to airport, are you?"

Episode Themes: Dumb Eric, Whiny Cory

Rating: 3. It's always good when Eric carries the show, and there were some good moments, but it just feels too much like a commercial for MTV.
