6-12 Cutting the Cord

Summary by: Laura

Orginal Air Date: 1999-01-08

Writer: Allison M. Gibson

Director: Kevin Tracy

Capsule Summary: Cory and Topanga take Shawn to a karaoke bar.

Extendo Summary: Cory and Topanga take Shawn out for dinner with a date to help him get over his depression at having let Angela go. When Angela arrives at the restaurant with a date of her own, Shawn pretends to be having fun, and joins the karaoke contest against Angela and Ron. On stage, Shawn breaks down in the middle of "I Got You Babe," telling his date he can't go on.

Afterward, Shawn does his whole "lone wolf" routine, telling Cory and Topanga he's afraid he's incapable of love, and their friendship is painful to him. Basically he breaks up with them. In the final scene, Cory, Topanga, Angela, Ron, Eric, Jack and Rachel are cheerfully hanging out together, talking and laughing; Shawn begins to approach, but then turns away, looking like a wounded puppy.

Meanwhile, Amy is going to lamaze classes because she's going to have another baby, and Alan is afraid he's going to be too old to play with the kid. So he goes out shopping for a motorcycle while Eric joins his mom at the classes. When Alan arrives, Eric ends up helping an attractive woman who has no partner. When Eric's lady goes into labor, Alan knows just what to do, and Eric tells him that's the kind of thing that makes him a good dad--taking care of things.

Rants: Do these people have to be so damn dramatic about everything? Isn't it enough that Shawn does still love Angela and that he is having no fun with his date--must he embarrass her, himself, and everyone in the restaurant by making a scene on stage? Get through the damn song, Shawn, then you can go brood in a corner or whatever. Speaking of which, what's with this self-imposed isolation? "I'm so ALONE I just need to be ALONE even though I hate to be ALONE NO DON'T LOOK AT ME." I'm so over Shawn; I just wish he could get over himself. Lord.

Highlights:

  • Eric calls Amy's pregnant stomach "Little Eric, or if it's a girl, Eric the girl."
  • Angela and Shawn issue Cory and Topanga restraining order forbidding them from butting into their lives.
  • Shawn isn't a bad singer.
  • Best. Cory and Topanga moment. EVER.
    Topanga: "Cory, are you sure
this is the right song for us?" Cory: "Topanga. You heard Angela and Ron. Now if we wanna win this, we must sing something dramatic!"
Topanga: "I know, I just don't think this is the right song for us."
Cory: "You wanna win or not?"
Topanga: "Yes, I wanna win, I just don't think you and I are the right people to express this particular sentiment!"
Cory: "Topanga, it's a beautiful song. And we're gonna sing it." (nods, grins) "Hit it, Cap'n Randy!"
    Music starts.
Cory (screaming, flashing his hands): "WAAAAAAR!!!!"
    Topanga (monotone): "Hah."
Cory (gyrating, grimacing): "What is it GOOD FOR!"
Topanga (monotone): "Absolutely nothing. Say it again."
    Cory: "WAAAAAAR!!!"
    Topanga: "Good God, you all."
  • In the end credits, Cory and Topanga sing "War" again, this time both into it. It feels very candid, and it looks like they're both having a lot of fun.

Oh, for gay: While Shawn lies draped despondently over the table, Cory snuggles him protectively.

Episode Themes:

Rating: 3. The Shawn and Angela parts are so painful, but Cory and Topanga's rare and wonderful antics make up for it.
