Capsule Summary: Eric's tutor encourages him to cheat.
Extendo Summary: Eric and Jason are planning a summer trip to Europe. The parents say they will only let Eric go if he brings up his grades. Eric goes to Mr. Feeny and asks for a break in grades, reasoning that if he gets one "A", he'll be hooked. Mr. Feeny's not convinced, but tells the boys if they're serious about raising their grades, he can recommend a tutor.
The tutor is a hot girl named Tori Hart. After assigning Jason a long reading and rebuffing his advances, Tori is all smiles to Eric, and moves the study session to Chubbie's. Tori hits on Eric, who all too happy to make out with her; but then he worries that a relationship will cut into their study time, and since he needs a lot of help for the test, maybe they should hold off. Tori expresses doubt that Eric can succeed and offers him the answers to the test.
After the test, Eric and Jason comiserate about its difficulty. Eric says he ended up leaving half the test blank. "Maybe I should have just taken the test answers when Tori offered them to me." Jason demands details, and Eric explains that he turned down the offer. "She wanted something in return." "What?" "Me," Eric smirks. Jason hits him for being so stupid. Feeny interrupts their scuffle to tell them their grades: Jason, B; Eric, A-.
"How can you get an A- when you leave half the test blank?" This is what Eric demands when he confronts Tori. She admits to filling in his answers correctly. "I didn't want to do it like this!" Eric cries. "I wanted to prove to myself that I'm smart." Tori thinks he doesn't have to be smart, and lists his cute features. Eric insists that he is not a bimbo.
Eric tries to study on his own for the next test, but ends up calling Tori the night before. He wants help; she gives him answers. He protests, but she tells him just to write them down; he can decide later. In the heat of the test room, he decides to use them.
Eric's parents are thrilled when he aces the second test, his grades having improved sufficiently to allow him to go to Europe. They give him luggage. He's depressed and returns to school to confess cheating to Feeny. He claims a guy in last year's class sold him the answers. Feeny is disappointed, and asks Eric why he did it. Eric gives the Europe reason. Feeny thinks there's "something deeper." Eric says there's never anything deeper with him--he's just a sort of a dumb guy. Feeny doesn't believe it.
Tori comes by, and Mr. Feeny tells her why Eric is there. Tori can't believe Eric told Mr. Feeny on her; "I didn't," says Eric, and Tori realizes she's outed herself. Feeny says "That's what you get for hiring a pretty girl as a tutor" to get Tori to realize what she's been doing to Eric. He says good teachers don't write people off. Then he lets her go without firing her from her tutor job, giving her another chance because he Doesn't Write People Off. Eric calls him a good teacher and they discuss their iminent fun-filled summer of summer school together.
Meanwhile, Mr. Turner's bike got run over and he goes to Shawn's uncle's bike shop to get it fixed. Shawn gets his crooked uncle to promise Mr. Turner a good price. When the bill comes out to five times the agreed-upon amount, Shawn protests: "This guy's my teacher. You mess with him, you mess with me." Uncle Mike is so proud of Shawn for his threatening skills that he gives in.
Meanwhile meanwhile, Cory has mono and is barely in the episode. Topanga brings him his homework and demands to know how he got the kissing disease. Cory refuses to say. Over the end credits, she tells him she's investigated the matter and concludes that he got it when he was sneezed on in chemistry. Cory accuses her of liking him, and promises to tell her how he feels about her if she tells how she feels about him. She admits she likes him and he pretends to fall asleep. She cries "I hate you!" and storms out. Ah, young love.
- Cory's obviously pleased expression as he tells himself, post-Topanga-storming-out, "I think I handled that pretty well." I think he did too.
- As Eric explains his "give us a free A for incentive" plan, Jason stands behind him, silently grinning and imitating Eric's every move.
- Topanga gives Cory his assignments, including a plank of wood from shop class. "You're supposed to make something."
Cory: "I did. It's a shelf."
Shawn tells Uncle Mike to take good care of Mr. Turner.
Uncle Mike (grinning): "Like family."
- Shawn evidently works part-time at his uncle's bike shop. I don't think this ever comes up again.
- Jason's full name is Jason Marsden, the same as the actor who portrays him.
Continuity, yay! After accidentally storming into the girls' room post-"I am not a bimbo" speech, Eric emerges asking "How come you guys get a couch?" In 4-2 Hair Today, Goon Tomorrow Cory asks the same thing when he follows Topanga into the girls' room for a chat. She responds, "Sometimes we need to lie down."
Episode Themes: Eric's Potential, Feeny Teaches a Lesson
Rating: 4. I do like me an episode with lots of Eric. Eric's troubledness at being treated like an object only makes him sexier. Is it wrong to think that?Back | Back to Season 2 Episode Guide | Next
