Capsule Summary: Shawn is abandoned by his parents.

Extendo Summary: After Shawn's mom, Virna, abandons the family--taking the motor home with her--Shawn's father, Chet, goes after her, leaving Shawn to stay with Cory's family for awhile. The Matthewses find living with Shawn trying. Cory and Eric feel crowded with three people sharing their bed and bath, and the parents feel the pressure on their nerves--and their budget!

Shawn isn't too thrilled either, cooped up with the Matthews' rules and regulations, and being dressed by Amy in Cory-esque clothes. At school, Jonathan Turner tells Shawn he can talk to him anytime about things, and gives him his number.

Finally, Shawn's had enough, and, after a lone-wolf conversation with Cory, he breaks out through the upstairs window. (There's a tree, so he doesn't die.)

Meanwhile, after music teacher GF Cat leaves some wearable feminine item (I'm thinking either bra or diaphragm) at Jonathan's apartment, the couple gets into a discussion about committment and shiznit. Cat says she loves Jonathan and feels ready to settle down, but Jonathan is less sure.

In the middle of a deep conversation about these topics, Shawn shows up unexpectedly at the apartment--accompanied by a cop. Seems Shawn has gotten caught with some older kids, preparing to vandalize the school. He has told the cop he's staying with Jonathan, who verifies the story.

Cat leaves and lets Jonathan deal with Shawn alone. Shawn thinks Jonathan will be cool and let him go on his way, but Jonathan yells at him, lecturing him about his "life track". The scolding is brief, however, and Shawn and
Jonathan bond afterward.

The next morning Jonathan brings Shawn back to the Matthews house. Jonathan and the parents discuss Shawn's future, wondering if Chet will ever come back. During their discussion, Chet calls; he's still far away, he hasn't found
Virna, and he's not planning on coming back anytime soon. The parents try to
convince him to return, but Chet says this is impossible; then points out that
Shawn has probably been hiding and listening to the whole conversation. He's
right. Shawn heard the whole thing, and now he feels rejected. He runs back to
Cory's room.

While the other adults run upstairs after him, Jonathan steps outside and catches Shawn climbing down the tree to freedom. Jonathan offers to let him stay at his place--indefinitely. Jonathan feels that he needs stability and certainly, so does Shawn. Shawn agrees, I suppose feeling that life with Mr. Turner will be less trying than life with the Matthews family. However, Cory does promise to leave the window open in case Shawn wants to come back.

Meanwhile, Eric freaks out trying to study for the SATs. Feeny offers to tell him three secrets to doing well on the tests, and in exchange for Eric working in his garden. After a week of hard, constant labor, during which Eric fiendishly looks forward to the reward, Feeny finally reveals the secrets: (1) Get a good night's sleep; (2) Clear your mind; (3) Trust yourself. Having kept him busy working for three days, Feeny has helped him with the first two already. Feeny explains that SAT means "scholastic APTITUDE test", so you really can't study for it (although nowadays, it means scholastic ACHIEVEMENT test, and you're supposed to study for it. Oh well. The secrets are still fairly valid.)

Quotes:

"I was stuck up there for awhile. I had to wait until the squirrel lost interest."  --Cory

Highlights:

  • While Eric is looking for his lucky pencil, Pency, Shawn walks out of the bathroom after a shower.
Eric: "What do you think you're doing?!"
    Shawn: "Cleaning out my ears?"
Eric: "With Towelly, my lucky towel? Are you insane?"
    Shawn: "One of us is..."
  • Later, Shawn walks down the stairs to the kitchen, yelling up as he does, "Well, pardon me, Eric, for breathing your lucky air!"
  • Feeny warns Jonathan not to get too involved with students; as he does, Eric walks towards an open locker door while staring at an SAT book, and Feeny calls out, "Eric, locker!"
  • Shawn tells the cop his father is out of town because he is "saving a baby girl in East Virginia who fell down a blowhole."
  • Shawn: "Women, huh?"
Jonathan: "What do you know about women?"
Shawn: "What do you wanna know?"
  • Feeny: "Care to take a guess at what the third secret is?"
    Eric: "You'rrreee... SATAN?"
  • Feeny: "Eric, do you know what SAT means?"
    Eric: "Sat?"

Fun Facts: Shawn SHAVES!

Episode Themes: Troubled Shawn, Eric's Potential, Dumb Eric

Rating: 4. Lone-wolf Shawn is not as good as Cool Shawn or Dumb Shawn, but he is better than Poet Shawn, and he has a sort of bad-boy-yet-vulnerable charm of his own. Plus, Eric. Eric is good. And I do like Mr. Turner and Shawn's relationship. This episode sets up the excellent Season 3.
